GPS and Geocaching

GPS

Definition – GPS = Global Positioning System

GPS uses a grid of satellites orbiting the earth to triangulate your position on the ground.

Triangulation - finding your distance from three or more satellites .

Using a GPS

Waypoints - sets of coordinates.

Coordinates are ordered sets of numbers that describe an exact position on the earth. Degrees, minutes and seconds of latitude and longitude.

Routes – a path to a destination consisting of multiple waypoints.

Geocaching - WWW.GEOCACHING.COM

Definition- a sport where you use a GPS to find hidden items (caches) at coordinates around your neighborhood or the world!

Cache – typically a waterproof container like Tupperware or an ammo box.

Travel bugs – dog-tag-like items with a barcode and number that is unique in the world.
